Fame is the name of the game. This series of portraits represents sporting legends of their time, whose achievements are still worth of being recognized. Twelve sportsmen and sportswomen, a different story behind each of them… Jan Szczepanski (born 1939) is a retired boxer from Poland, who won the gold medal in the lightweight division (60 kg) at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. In the final he defeated Hungary’s Laszlo Orban on points (5:0). Like many Polish sportsmen of his time, he served the Army as an officer. In 1961 he joined Poland’s national boxing team, and represented his country 15 times in international competitions. His career seemed to have come to a premature end in 1963, when he had to refrain from contact sport, but after five years he did make a wonderful come back. Those were his days of greatest glory. He became the European Champion (Madrid 1971) and eventually the Olympic Champion (Munich 1972). He fought 290 bouts in his boxing career, winning 251, loosing only 24. For his achievements, Jan Szczepanski was decorated with one of Poland’s highest Orders Ð the Order of Polonia Restituta, and twice with the Cross of Merit. Despite being an outsider almost his entire life, he remained a legend of Polish boxing. A feature film ÒClinchÓ by Filip Bajon and Piotr Andrejew is loosely based on Szczepanski’s life. He also acted in a feature film by Marek Piwowski. He lives in Warsaw.
