Judges’ comments

I like a lot of what I saw in this category. I actually thought they were among the best pieces I saw all week. Very impressive! We insisted on watching the pieces on our laptops, and not on the big screen, because-obviously, that’s how they were intended to be viewed. First, second and third all did an amazing job evoking emotion. The pacing was wonderful, the eye movement was there-yes, even on the tiny screen-very noticeable.
“Tarryl Hill Funeral” did such a remarkable job mixing the music from the funeral with the bites. The timing was right on. The editor let it breath in all the right spots, allowing you to absorb and contemplate what was being said without ever slowing down the piece. Nice, nice piece.
“Veterans Remember Fallen Brothers” had such a wonderful example of letting a shot play out…. letting the audience get uncomfortable-letting them feel what is actually happening. In this case, the editor was able to force the viewer to examine their own feelings about what they were seeing. Rarely have I seen this done so well. Bravo.
“Neal Shrine Funeral” took a very close third. Great mix of video and stills. The pace changed with the tempo of the music, which I didn’t expect to find in a funeral piece-but it worked.

The web entries shine brightly in their ability to bring emotion to the viewer the way television used to. Though still rudimentary in editing style (due, I believe, to bandwidth issues) the ability to work without time restraints and let a story breath is the envy of many a TV photojournalist.
This years’ winners ALL convey emotion. All three give us journalism with respect for the subject. Grab the box of tissues as you are pulled into winners: ”TARRYL HILL FUNERAL” first place, “VETERANS REMEMBER FALLEN BROTHERS” second, and “NEAL SHINE FUNERAL” third.
