Here’s what NPPA and the Oscars have in common. Most years the winner is the piece (or movie) that best ‘moves’ you. That’s the case here. It’s all about the pacing, and not getting in the way of the story. “Driving Mr. Herrin” gave you time to explore your feelings-whether you laughed, cried, or just felt uncomfortable. It had the timing of a great comedian. “Gimme Some Slack” and “Jumping Rope” were so fun to watch. Great shot selection, and made you both nervous and tired just watching. Nice job!

There’s not a dry eye in the house when you watch “DRIVING MR HERRIN”. The complexities in this simple spot are to be studied and analyzed if you can keep yourself from being pulled into the powerful story. The pacing is varied and the nat sounds are gingerly placed in all the right places; both proving to be the winning ingredients for a truly memorable experience.

“GIMME SOME SLACK” walks a tightrope, er, band of tension combining a musical sense of natural sound with humorous quick cuts. It’s a fun and accomplished piece as is “JUMPING ROPE”. The latter taking us on a fast paced look into the newly popular competitive sport of jump roping. “JUMPING ROPE” has one of the best and most naturally integrated stand-ups I’ve seen in years.

With “BRACELET LADY” it was obvious that the editor applied solid skills on many levels to overcome the short comings of script and photography. For this, we awarded honors.
