The Long Goodbye / More than a hundred seized dogs filled the cages at Polk County Animal Control for more than 2 months while their owner, accused of starving and fighting them, fought in court to get them back. Shelter staff both hoped to win custody of the dogs and dreaded the day it would happen. It would mean euthanizing most of them. On the day of the hearing, the kennel worker who cared for the dogs, fed the dogs a special meal and tried to figure out how to say goodbye.
