BOP 2006 > Web Site Winners > Best Feature Picture Story (Unaffiliated Sites)
- 1st Place
- Beside Still Waters

For seven years Florence Abel, 89, of Owensboro, Ky., has been slipping away from memory and mind. As the final stage of Alzheimer's disease takes hold and she loses all that’s familiar, she can still rely on one of the most consistent themes of her life, compassion.
- Judge's Comments (Andrew)
“Beside Still Waters” from Kari Collins was the clear winner for the Best Feature Picture Story for the Independent category. It was a pleasant surprise that the quality of the entries in this category actually exceeded the overall quality of the small affiliated category.
The judges unanimously agreed that not only were the photos beautiful, intimate and touching; but that the presentation and packaging of the whole story was well done and easy to navigate. Every photo had its purpose, which speaks well for the editing process. In addition, I noted how there were times when the frame went to black and stayed there to help the user listen to words. I thought that treatment was appropriate and made the images and edit even stronger. This technique helps the user to breathe in the experience and in the story.
