Title; SURFBOATS In the beginning of the 1900's Surfboats were introduced on Australian beaches to be used as rescue crafts.Their crews, (now affectionately called BOATIES),would row their surfboats into often hazardous surf conditions to carry out rescues on swimmers who had found themselves in dangerous and life threatening situations. The surfboat would be equipped with a reel and lifebelt in the bow of the craft which the Bowman would attach to himself , diving from the boat to affect the rescue. A second Boatie would work the reel , with the remaining crew there to manoeuvre the boat. Surfboats were eventually replaced in this capacity of rescue craft with the introduction of the highly manoeuvrable I.R.B.s , (Inflatable Rubber Boats), in the late 1970's . The Surfboat is now totally a racing class of craft used in competition, but maintained as one of the great traditions of Australian Surf Lifesaving.
