A 22-month campaign of aerial bombardment by Sudan's Arab government and ground attacks by allied Arab "Janjaweed" militias against African villages in the vast desert region of Darfur has driven more than 1.5 million people from their homes and has killed another 70,000 in the remote western provinces of Africa's largest country.
