It's an open secret amongst the currency traders in the money bazaar deep within the ancient streets of Peshawar: most of Afghanistan's currency comes from Russia. Though the Afghanistan National Bank has not issued any new currency since the Taliban took over Kabul, the UN-recognized Afghan government of President Burhanuddin Rabbani has ordered new currencies to be printed in Russia. Even Uzbek General Rashid Dostum has Afghani s printed there with the only difference being variations in color and serial numbers. All of this contributes to a burgeoning underground economy that connects money launderers, refugees, drug barons and smugglers with banks and money agents around the world.
