Story is about the immediate aftermath of the withdrawl of the Taliban and Al Qaeda from the Nangahar province of Afghanistan. It depicts the crosscurrents of euphoria, anarchy, fear, retribution, grief and convalescence. It also underscores the danger journalists faced as exampled by the casket of slain Italian journalist Maria Grazia Cutuli. The photographer was in her group and on the same road 30 minutes behind the ambush. Afghanis lining the road cheer as a convoy of mujahadeen commanders and journalists drives towards Jalalabad from Pakistan at nightfall. It was the first day the border crossing was opened and the Taliban retreated from the region the day before.
