In a test of the young country s democracy, a crowd estimated at over 80,000 came out to show their solidarity with striking Czech Television journalists protesting the political appointee of their stations general manager. Czech President and former political dissident Vaclav Havel supported the insurgency comparing the political appointment to the communist seizure of power in 1948, which he noted also had a lawful framework. Journalists called off the strike 47-days later after Jiri Hodac stepped down after being hospitalized from exhaustion and an appointee with no apparent political affiliation or agenda was named.
